The Maine state quarter was released in 2003 as part of the 50 State
Quarters program. The design features a lighthouse on the coast of Maine
with a schooner sailing in the distance. The inscriptions on the coin
include the state name "Maine," the date of admission to the Union
"1820," and the motto "Dirigo," which means "I direct" or "I guide."
The
lighthouse depicted on the coin is modeled after the Portland Head
Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, which was commissioned by George
Washington in 1787.
